Best Book for Physical Chemistry for JEE 2027 (Main & Advanced)
Last Updated: October 2026 · Editions checked 24 October 2026
The best physical chemistry books for JEE are NCERT for theory, Narendra Awasthi's Problems in Physical Chemistry for practice (Level 1 for Main, Levels 2–3 for Advanced) and R.C. Mukherjee for mole concept in Class 11. Add P. Bahadur's Numerical Chemistry only if you are aiming for a top JEE Advanced rank.
Our picks at a glance
| Use it for | Book | What it is | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base for everyone | NCERT Class 11 & 12 | Theory + basic numericals | Main + Advanced |
| Foundation (Class 11) | R.C. Mukherjee, Chemical Calculations | Mole concept numericals | Main + Advanced |
| Best practice book | Narendra Awasthi, Problems in Physical Chemistry | Questions in 3 levels | Main + Advanced |
| For top Advanced ranks | P. Bahadur, Numerical Chemistry | Harder numericals | Advanced |
| Theory (self-study) | O.P. Tandon Physical Chemistry | Theory + solved examples | Main |
One theory source and one problem book per branch, finished completely, beats five books started. So every pick below says what it is for, and when it is not worth buying.
The best physical chemistry books for JEE, explained
Which books should you use? Pick by your goal
JEE Main only
NCERTthenN Awasthi Level 1thenJEE Main PYQs
Skip states of matter, solid state and surface chemistry: they are not in the JEE Main 2026 syllabus.
Main + Advanced, with coaching
Class notes + NCERTthenR.C. Mukherjee (mole concept)thenN Awasthi Levels 1–3thenJEE Advanced PYQs
Add P. Bahadur only after N Awasthi Level 2 feels comfortable.
Self-study, no coaching
O.P. Tandon (theory)thenNCERTthenN Awasthi, chapter by chapter
Derive each formula once yourself before solving numericals on it.
Dropper, 6–8 months left
N Awasthi (weak chapters, all levels)thenPYQs
Physical is the most predictable scoring area; don't add new books.
What the 2026 syllabus changes for your books
The JEE Main 2026 syllabus (NTA) has 20 chemistry units and no longer includes states of matter, solid state, surface chemistry, s-block elements, hydrogen, metallurgy, polymers, environmental chemistry or chemistry in everyday life. Most books still print those chapters. If you are writing only JEE Main, skip them. JEE Advanced 2026 still includes all of them (its syllabus is unchanged from 2025), so Advanced aspirants should keep them.
The order to study physical chemistry
Start with mole concept and stoichiometry, because every numerical in solutions, equilibrium and electrochemistry uses them. Then atomic structure, thermodynamics, chemical and ionic equilibrium, solutions, electrochemistry and chemical kinetics.
For each chapter: NCERT theory and formulas → derive each formula once yourself → N Awasthi Level 1 → that chapter's PYQs → Level 2 (and 3 for Advanced). Keep a formula sheet with units, and redo every numerical you got wrong a week later. Physical rewards practice more than reading.
Books you can skip
P.W. Atkins is a university textbook and far beyond JEE. Doing N Awasthi and P. Bahadur at the same time slows both; finish N Awasthi first. Theory books for coaching students: if your notes are good, NCERT plus N Awasthi is enough.
Practise with real JEE papers
No book replaces past papers. Once a chapter is done, solve its questions from the official JEE Main 2026 papers and answer keys and, for Advanced, the official JEE Advanced papers 2015–2025. How we chose these books
We matched each book against the official NTA JEE Main 2026 syllabus and the JEE Advanced 2026 syllabus, checked what students and teachers consistently recommend across forums and coaching advice, and confirmed the latest edition of each book on Amazon India on 24 October 2026. Frequently Asked Questions about Physical Chemistry Books for JEE
Which is the best book for physical chemistry for JEE?
Narendra Awasthi's Problems in Physical Chemistry for practice, with NCERT for theory. Use R.C. Mukherjee for mole concept in Class 11.
Is N Awasthi enough for physical chemistry?
Yes for practice, for both JEE Main and Advanced, if you finish all levels and solve past papers. It has no theory, so pair it with NCERT and class notes.
N Awasthi or P. Bahadur: which should I do?
N Awasthi first. P. Bahadur is harder and more subjective, useful only for JEE Advanced after N Awasthi is done.
Is R.C. Mukherjee still useful for JEE?
Yes, for the calculation-heavy foundation chapters: mole concept, stoichiometry, equivalent concept and solutions. It is best used in Class 11.
What is the best theory book for physical chemistry for JEE?
NCERT plus coaching notes cover JEE theory. If you study on your own, O.P. Tandon's Physical Chemistry explains each chapter from scratch.
Is NCERT enough for physical chemistry in JEE Main?
For theory, mostly yes. For practice, no: JEE Main numericals are harder than NCERT's, so add N Awasthi Level 1 and past papers.
